Global Citizenship Education

We are citizens of the world. Environmentally, economically, in terms of digital information, we have never been more interconnected. Actions and decisions made in one part of the world affect all of us. Global Citizenship Education (GCE) seeks to promote and understand this interconnectedness.

Our school takes part in the WorldWise Global Schools program. We in Santa Sabina call it our Dev Ed programme and it permeates classes in TY, Junior Cycle Wellbeing and curricular subjects and Senior Cycle. We also have a team of teachers who volunteer to promote GCE and we have extra-curricular events and clubs throughout the year.

Our dedication was recognised on 4 April when we were awarded the Global Schools passport, Diplomatic Level. Mr Flynn, our Italian language assistant Elena, and a selection of our Global Goals Day prize winners were delighted to accept our award.

Cross Schools Project

Well done to this year’s team. The theme was around SDGs’ Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and Goal 14: Life below Water. The Burrow NS (2nd class) and St Fintans NS (5th class) had a lovely morning courtesy of Santa Sabina and St Fintans High School students. They learnt about the acidification of the oceans with increased carbon emissions and the slow death of the coral reefs with rise in ocean temperatures. They learnt about our precious ocean ecosystems and how not using or buying plastic can help save those ecosystems.
