Advice for heavy schoolbags

Ways to tackle heavy schoolbags!

Unfortunately, heavy school bags are a feature of secondary school life.  Here is some advice on the best way to manage those heavy school bags:

  • Choose the right backpack, with wide padded shoulder straps and a padded back for comfort.
  • Always wear the backpack on both shoulders to distribute the weight evenly.
  • Wear the backpack higher on the back and close to the body, do not let it "slouch" down towards the bottom.
  • Consider a backpack with a waist strap to help distribute the weight more, especially if the student has a long distance to walk.
  • Choose a backpack with compartments and use all those compartments to distribute the weight of books and other requirements.
  • Organise your day and try to pack light, bringing only what is necessary.
  • Stop as often as possible at school lockers so as to reduce the amount of books being carried throughout the day.
  • Bend down using both knees.  Do not bend over at the waist when wearing or lifting a heavy backpack.
  • Learn back-strengthening exercises to help build up the muscles used to carry a backpack.
