Transition Year

Between the completion of the Junior Certificate and the start of the Leaving Certificate, Santa Sabina, Dominican College organises Transition Year which involves carefully constructed courses that deepen students’ appreciation and understanding of such diverse topics as the creative arts, language, literature, and social and environmental issues.

Research has shown that students who complete Transition Year gain approximately 40 extra points in their Leaving Certificate, just one of the reasons why the year is compulsory at Santa Sabina, Dominican College

At some schools, it is optional but it is an exciting and rewarding year after which students enter the Senior Cycle with greater maturity and confidence and a better understanding of subject choices and career options.

Transition Year provides opportunities for:

development of personal and organisational skills

enhancing leadership, initiative and self-discipline skills

work experience

community outreach programmes

participation in the President’s Award (Gaisce) programme

The Young Social Innovators Programme.

participation in the Young Scientist Exhibition

field trips in Ireland or abroad

Students’ progress is monitored by continuous assessment throughout the Year at the end of which each student must present a portfolio of activities undertaken and completed.
