Students in Santa Sabina have been very active this year and have participated in both Debating and Public Speaking competitions during first and second terms. I wish to congratulate all involved on the high quality of research and commitment at all times.
I would like to thank the Debating Prefect, Karina O’Flynn, and her colleagues who have been very supportive in organising the First Year Debating Competitions. Karina also assisted in the preparation and organisation of the ‘Concern Debates’ throughout the year.
Transition Year students participated in the ‘Rotary Club’ public speaking competition in March in which they presented speeches on the theme of ‘The Importance of Charity in our Society’. Congratulations to Eadaoin Leavey, Laoise Ballance, Síle Somers and Katie Veale who were our representatives in this competition.
Fourth Year students were also involved in the ‘European Youth Parliament’ event. Well done to Lisa Kinane, Hazel Conway, Louise Boland, Emma Conlon and Rebecca Guyett who participated in this competition and a special congratulations to Síle Somers who succeeded in making it through to the National Finals.
Fifth Year and Sixth Year students, Katie Culhane-Tipper, Hannah Simpson and Karina O’Flynn, represented Santa Sabina in ‘The Howth Business and Professional Women’s Public Speaking Competition’ in November in The Marine Hotel in Sutton. Well done on their excellent presentation on the topic of ‘Women’s Changing Status In Our Society’.
Fifth Years, Caoimhe Comiskey, Aisling Durcan and Clodagh Cremen, participated in the ‘Mental Health’ public speaking competition in December. Well done to all for their commitment and hard work.
The ‘Concern’ Debating Team has been very active throughout the entire year and the commitment and high level research shown by the team was reflected in the fact that they succeeded in making it through to the final sixteen schools in the country. They debated in eight rounds of the competition which included topics involving the Millennium Development Goals and the World’s Population Time Bomb. I would like to thank Sinéad McCann, Eimhear O’Brien, Niamh Emmet, Emma- Kate Cooney and Gwen Connolly for their excellent work throughout the year.
Finally, I would like to congratulate Eimhear O’Brien who will succeed the excellent Karina O’Flynn as Debating Prefect for next year.
