On the 25th of March, three other girls from my year and I went to the Europa Academy in Swords, for the Fingal Comhairle na nÓg Annual General Meeting.

We were selected to represent Santa Sabina’s student body at the meeting and to share the views of young people in our school.

There were representatives from most secondary schools in the Fingal area at the Meeting. When we arrived at the Europa, we quickly settled in by playing some team-building games and exercises that “broke the ice” and made everyone relax around each other.

After that we listened to short talks given by the chairperson of the Fingal Comhairle na nÓg and the Lord Mayor of Fingal. Both talks were extremely empowering and talked about the important role that young people have in being active members of society, that our generation are the future of Ireland and the voice of young people in Ireland matters and is heard.

We then split up into smaller groups with each group being given a topic to discuss in further detail.

The topics included:

-Substance abuse and the effects that it has on a person (which included ‘Head-Shops’)

-What it means to be Irish?

-The inclusion of all people in society.

After discussing our topics with people in our group, we then rejoined the main group and each group made a short presentation on the findings and conclusions they discovered while exploring their particular topic.

The day gave young people a chance to voice their opinions and discuss social concerns that mattered to them. It also gave young people who are interested in politics and current and local affairs a brief look into the Irish political system. I thought the day was extremely successful, enjoyable and worthwhile.
