Geography Project

By Ella Thunder (1O)

As part of our Geography studies this year, our class, under the guidance of Ms Timmons, learnt about the oil industry in Saudi Arabia.

I lived in Saudi with my family from 2007 to 2011. They have many interesting customs and traditions there, including it being compulsory for women to wear everyday dress called the abaya. I brought two of these into class and two of the girls modelled them for the class group.

My classmates were interested to learn that although these garments have to be black in colour, Saudi women like to embellish them with sequins, beading and various designs. The girls were also fascinated to learn that I also had to wear the abaya whenever I left the compound.
