| Transition Year News Autumn - Winter 2010 |

| Congratulations to our Fourth Years on a wonderful start to the year. The students are busy with a number of exciting projects and everyone really enjoyed all of the activities during a fantastic trip to Achill earlier this term. The Community Outreach Initiative also proved to be an extremely rewarding experience. |

Senior students have enjoyed several visits to places of historic and cultural interest this term including The Sculpture in Context Exhibition in The Botanic Gardens and The Sir John Lavery Exhibition, Passion and Politics, in the Hugh Lane Municipal Art Gallery. |

| Music Trip to The NCH and Glee Factor! |
| |
The Fifth and Sixth Year Music classes visited The National Concert Hall on Tuesday 12th October where they enjoyed performances of two prescribed Leaving Certificate works.
Congratulations to everyone who took part in our first Glee Factor on Friday 26th November! Very well done to our two winners, Alannah Hannigan (2P) and Ríona McCarthy (2P) who gave a brilliant rendition of Lady Gaga’s Poker Face. They definitely have the glee factor! |

| Everyone in Santa Sabina enjoyed a wonderful, fun filled, Fancy Dress Non-Uniform Day on October 22nd, marking the start of the Halloween mid-term break. |

| |
| Santa Sabina’s Green Schools Committee is busy maintaining its Green Flag in Waste Management along with working towards a new Green Flag in Energy Management. The Green Schools Committee is also very much looking forward to Santa Sabina’s Green School Action Day in January. |

| Science Update |
| |
Santa Sabina students took part in a number of exciting events marking this year’s Science Week, November 7th – 14th. These included a 6th Year Physics trip to DCU where students attended a lecture by Dr. Steven Chu, US Secretary of Energy and co-winner for the Nobel Prize for Physics (1997), a fascinating presentation in the school by Mr John Flannery from The Irish Astronomical Society and a school Science Quiz which was open to all students.
5th Year student Rebecca Guyett will represent Santa Sabina in The BT Young Scientist and Technology Competition 2011. This year’s competition takes place from January 12th – 15th in the RDS. |

An Bord Bia Presentation

| The Transition Year Home Economics students, together with our visitors from Malawi, spent a very informative and enjoyable morning with Ms Sheila Kelly from An Bord Bia during her visit to the school on Wednesday 17th November. Students watched attentively as she prepared a selection of delicious dishes followed by a tasting session where they got to sample all of the dishes which, needless-to-say, they thoroughly enjoyed. |

| RE News: Irish Aid's Worldwise Programme |
| |
Santa Sabina’s staff and students recently welcomed two members of the Worldwise team from our link school in Masongola in Malawi. Mr Mphedwa (the Deputy Principal) and Ms Kansale visited Dublin and Santa Sabina from 11th to 23rd November. Thank you to all staff and students who organised a number of exciting events for them which undoubtedly enhanced their experience of Ireland and their appreciation of our school community in Santa Sabina. |

Santa Sabina was thrilled to play host to RTE Radio for the recording of a series of four radio broadcasts, inspired by William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, on Thursday 9th December. Our Sixth Year students and their English teachers were invited to attend and take part in the recordings along with Leaving Cert. students from our neighbouring schools. The four programmes are due to be broadcast on the four Sundays of January 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd 2011.
Fifth and Sixth Year students attended a performance of Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa at The Helix Theatre in DCU on the evening of Tuesday 16th November, celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the play’s première performance in Dublin’s Abbey Theatre in 1990.

| Transition Year students have been very active in the Concern Debates this term and Fifth Year students are making good progress in The Mental Health Public Speaking Competition. |

| TY Trip to Glasnevin Cemetery |
| |
| Transition Year students recently enjoyed a fascinating visit to historic Glasnevin Cemetery as part of the Transition Year Environmental Studies Programme, specifically the Local History Module in which students are required to research a local event, person or place of historic importance. |

| The Axa Road Safety Road Show |
| |
| All Transition Year students attended The Axa Road Safety Road Show on Tuesday 16th November which highlighted the dangers associated with dangerous driving. The event was organized by Fingal County Council and was held at The Helix Theatre in DCU. |

| Sports Review: Christmas ‘10 |
| |
| Once again we are delighted with the large numbers participating in extra-curricular sports this year in Santa Sabina. With 10 Hockey teams, 8 Basketball teams, 5 Volleyball teams, 2 Football teams and an Equestrian team all competing this term, more than two hundred students are training weekly. While the results in matches have been mixed, all have represented their school with pride! |
