Sixth Year Students Visit The Highlanes Gallery in Drogheda
A number of our Sixth Year Art students enjoyed a visit to The Highlanes Gallery in Drogheda on the afternoon of 20th January, when they had the opportunity of seeing The Nano Reid and Gerard Dillon Exhibition.
Nano Reid and Gerard Dillon, (who both had a strong association with Drogheda) are two of the most significant Irish artists of their generation and shared friendship, inspiration and a love of the landscape, inhabitants and history of their native land. The exhibition examined the influences, affinities and contrasts between the output of these two major Irish artists and featured work from both public and private collections.
The Highlanes Municipal Art Gallery is a magnificent, new, state-of-the-art, dedicated, visual art space. It is sited on the former Drogheda Franciscan Church and part of the Friary; known locally as the ‘High Lane Church’. The Franciscans gifted the property to the people of Drogheda when they ended their 760 year association with the town in 2000. The buildings date from the early 19th century, though elements date back to earlier times. The main exhibition spaces are open plan but much of the original character has been retained.
The Sixth Year girls were fortunate to have a guided tour of the exhibition which aided them in their understanding of the work and study of the gallery space. The exhibition is a cross-border cooperation with the F.E. McWilliam Gallery in Banbridge, Co. Down and will be on tour there over the coming months.
We in Santa Sabina would like to thank the staff of The Highlanes Gallery for their cooperation in organising this immensely enjoyable tour of the Nano Reid and Gerard Dillon Exhibition and we look forward to a return visit to this fantastic gallery very soon.
