Tomi Reichental signs his book
for 6th Year students
On the 22nd November, 6th year students and teachers gathered together to listen to Tomi Reichental, a survivor of the Holocaust, speak about his experiences at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp during World War II.

The Holocaust was a period in the Second World War during which millions of people, particularly those of the Jewish faith, were captured and imprisoned in concentration camps throughout Europe. Tomi Reichental was born in Slovakia in 1935. He was a victim of bullying during his childhood because of his religion. His father was sent to Auscwitz concentration camp, but he managed to escape by jumping from the carriage to freedom in the forests.

Tomi, his brother and mother survived the Holocaust, due to luck, hope and determination. He had vivid memories of people dying of starvation in front of him and others choosing to end their suffering by making an impossible run for freedom in order to get shot.

An immense sense of respect was felt for this unique occasion. As he spoke it was obvious that he found it understandably very difficult to relive these painful memories and he often had to pause during the two hours he was speaking.

Tomi spent the last 50 years in silence, not wanting to talk about what happened during the Holocaust. He decided to end his silence and tell his story, to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive for future generations.

It was an honour and a privilege to hear him share his experience with us. We will never forget his visit to Santa Sabina.
