Autumn ‘09 Art Trips to The Casino in Marino and
The Sculpture in Context Exhibition in The Botanic Gardens

Fifth Year Art students visited the Casino in Marino early this term as part of their History of Art studies. The Casino, designed in 1759 by William Chambers for Lord Charlemont, is a wonderful example of Georgian Neo-Classical architecture.

Fifth Year students also visited the Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin in October to see the annual Sculpture In Context exhibition. With over 100 works in the exhibition, sculptors from throughout Ireland and abroad were represented. The works were displayed throughout the gardens, hothouses and in the gallery above the Visitors’ Centre.

The Fifth Year girls thoroughly enjoyed their Art trip. They all really appreciated the fantastic opportunity to see the art and architecture they were studying in reality. They learnt so much and had great fun doing it too.

The students from 4O were also fortunate in visiting the Sculpture In Context exhibition this term and everyone had lots of fun exploring the gardens and studying the various pieces. The girls enjoyed a lovely afternoon sketching and photographing the various works in preparation for class projects.

Senior Student News

Various Senior Art classes have also enjoyed recent Art trips to Castletown House, The National Museum in Collins Barracks, The Irish Museum of Modern Art, The National Art Gallery, No 29 Fitzwilliam St (a Georgian town house) and the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery to see an exhibition of work by the Irish artist Francis Bacon, the centenary of his birth being celebrated in 2009.

Students interested in careers in Art are also benefiting enormously from our after school Portfolio Preparation Classes and many are aiming to submit portfolios to several Art Colleges early in 2010. We wish them well in their artistic endeavours.
