Sports Round Up

The official opening of the new sports facilities on May 7th capped what has been a fantastic year for sport in Santa Sabina. The silverware has been mounting with one Basketball trophy, three Hockey, three Squash, one Athletics and one Equestrian trophy already in for engraving and Tennis and Athletics still ongoing at time of going to print! In addition to the victories, there has been lots of fun and some disappointments but congratulations to all who represented the school so proudly in green and white. Of course none of this would have been possible without the dedication of staff and students. Many thanks to all who gave of their time to ensure that "Sport for All" is the driving ethos in Santa Sabina.

Hockey: 11 teams competed in Leinster and in North Leinster competitions. Three coaches, Ms J. Pearson, Ms A. Woods and Mr C. Gillett were involved. The Senior 2, Junior A, Minor B and First Year A all reached the North side League Finals. First years and Minors won their Finals with ease but both the Senior 2 and Junior A Finals went to penalty flicks. The Seniors held their nerve to win but the Juniors were unlucky to lose out. The Juniors also reached the semi final of the Leinster Plate. The Senior 1 team also succeeded in progressing to the Quarter Finals of the Leinster Senior Cup, a fantastic achievement made possible in part by the new Astro. The future looks bright for Santa Sabina Hockey.

Basketball: 8 teams competed and the coaches involved were Ms G. O’Doherty, Philly Clarke, Clare Egan, Gina Foley and Leesa Grennell. While the Senior 2 team were unlucky to lose their final the Cadette Premier team won their final. Congratulations to that team and in particular to their captain, Michelle Clarke, who will represent Santa Sabina when she plays for the Irish U16 team in Macedonia this summer. Michelle also won the “top scorer” in a recent international competition when competing for her club! Hopes are high for a win at senior level next year when all these players step up an age group.

Volleyball: Under the watchful eye of Mr Tony Kenny, 5 teams competed in volleyball this year. The 2 Junior teams reached the regional finals of their competitions and travelled to Galway for the All-Ireland Quarter Finals where their run ended. However it was a great experience for the teams and they hope to go even further in the competition next year when they step up an age grade.

GAA: For the first time Santa Sabina entered two teams in the football competition, one at U16 and one at U14. Thanks to the work of Ms F. McEvoy and Ms C. Giltenan. Again the younger team laid down a marker for the future by reaching the Quarter Final of their competition in which they were narrowly defeated.

Soccer: The Senior Soccer Team once again represented Santa Sabina with pride and we will be sorry to see so many of them leaving as they are in Sixth Year. Under the guidance of Ms. C. Giltenan they reached the Semi-Final of the cup being unlucky to come up against Templeogue. We hope that those on the team who are leaving Santa Sabina will continue to play soccer next year.

Equestrian Sport: Ms O'Dwyer was hopeful at the start of the season that the squad would do well but they surpassed her expectations by bringing home the first ever trophy to Santa Sabina in this sport. Competing in 10 events they won the Inter Schools Novice Team Trophy. Thanks to all the parents who drove and acted as Chef d’Equipe.

Good luck to the new captain Olivia Keating and the team in next year’s competition. It will be a hard act to follow!

Squash: Ms J. Connolly supervised the entering of three squash teams into the Leinster schools competition for the first time in a number of years. And what a return to competition it was with the U13A and the U15A teams winning the Leinster title! Both went on to contest the All-Ireland, which the U13 won and the U15 team coming in as Runners Up. Many thanks to Martha Lenihan for all her assistance in organising the teams and for going on the trip to Galway.

Athletics: Ms A Woods was ably assisted by Ms F. Ward in coaching Athletics. Again we saw the flexibility of the Astro as we were able to mark a track for summer term. Great numbers of Senior students came out to work on their fitness and good luck to those who are running the mini-marathon. A large group competed in the Sutton Park Invitational Event and as a result of many fine individual performances Santa Sabina won the team event by a margin of 150 points. Lots of medals too in the North Leinsters in Santry! Iseult O’Donnell (800m), Nicole Guiney(1500m), Victoria Dwyer(High Jump) and the Inter and Senior Relay teams all won gold with Sarah King (Javelin), Lauren McGinn (Hurdles) and Victoria Dwyer (100m) winning silver and Jessica Gaffney (200m) bringing home a bronze. (Iseult O’Donnell has already won the Woodies All-Ireland (800m).

In the Leinster Finals on May 22nd, the Inter 4x100m of Siobhán Woods, Iseult O’Donnell, Aedín Woods and Lauren McGinn, as well as Iseult O’Donnell in the 800m, became Leinster Champions. In addition Victoria Dwyer won silver in the high jump and the Senior 4x100m team of Kate McKiernan, Victoria Dwyer, Jessica Teeling and Kate Wheeler won bronze. A fantastic day for Santa Sabina!

Congratulations to our Atheletics team who enjoyed wonderful success at the All Ireland Schools Championships in Tullamore on Saturday, 5th June.

Iseult O'Donnell won Bronze in the 800m.

Victoria Dwyer won bronze in the High Jump.

The 4x100m Relay Team of Aedin and Siobhan Woods, Lauren McGinn and Iseult O'Donnell won Bronze in their event.

A truly fantastic achievement! Very well done from everyone in Santa Sabina! We are all very proud of our Athletics Team!

Tennis: 5 teams were entered in the Leinster competition by Coach Ms J. Pearson. At last we had a proper home venue with six courts marked on the Astro. At the time of going to print these competitions are still ongoing.

Finally we would like to congratulate those individuals who have represented either their country or their county. Aisling Conlon represents Ireland in canoe slalom. Days after completing her Leaving Certificate exams Aisling will canoe for Ireland in both the European and World Junior events. In addition, even though still a Junior, she has been invited to compete at the World Senior Event this summer also. Michelle Clarke will play for the Irish U16 Basketball team later this summer. Niamh Walsh is a member of the Irish U17 soccer team. Siobhán Woods plays on the Dublin U16 football team who have reached the Leinster Championship semi–final undefeated. Good luck to all these students over the summer. We are very proud of you!
