Santa Sabina, Christian Secondary School, St. Dominic's, Secondary School for girls in dublin

History & Background

Santa Sabina, Dominican College is a long-established State-funded girls’ secondary school built on the site of a late-18th century country residence, which became a small 15-student convent school in 1912 under the auspices of the Cabra congregation of the Dominican Sisters (who remain Trustees of the School today).

On purchasing the property – located on the isthmus linking what was once the island of Howth to the mainland at Sutton - the Sisters named it ‘Santa Sabina’ after the Roman martyr who is also the patron saint of the Rome residence of the Master General of the Dominican Order.

From its early days as a convent school, it grew rapidly to become St Dominic’s High School in 1937 and today caters for almost 650 students – aged between 12 and 19 years – representing families from various parts of Dublin’s northside.

Major extensions and refurbishments have been carried out in every decade since the school’s formation, providing such essential facilities as new classrooms, laboratories, home economics kitchens, computer and art rooms, sports and PE amenities.

Philosophy
The School’s over-riding aim is to help its students take their place in society as mature and committed Christians. The Dominican Order’s motto – Veritas – meaning Truth, is the inspiration of the school’s work.

Mission Statement
Santa Sabina, Dominican College, aims to educate the whole person and to encourage the qualities of respect, truth, responsibility, happiness and excellence in a caring, Christian atmosphere.
