SPHE Programme on offer in Santa Sabina Dominican College

Our SPHE programme is tailor made to meet the needs of our students and is reviewed and evaluated periodically.

Social, Personal and Health Education, as part of the curriculum, supports the personal development, health and well being of young people and helps them create and maintain supportive relationships.

Social, Personal and Health Education in Post Primary schools is a programme for students in the Junior Cycle and builds on the experience of all children at Primary level.

1st Year

 

One single period per week

 

Unit 1:   Transition to a new school
Unit 2:   Self esteem, friendship, and bullying
Unit 3:   Study skills 
Unit 4:   Relationships and sexuality
Unit 5:   Smoking
Unit 6:   Alcohol and teenage binge drinking
Unit 7:   Healthy eating/living
Unit 8:   Review /Evaluation
2nd Year

 

One single period weekly

Unit 1:   Reflection on school progress to date, developing personal potential,
               stressing the importance of good communication and discussion skills for
               learning.  Set Smart targets for the year. Good motivation techniques.
Unit2:    Use of leisure time and the value of constructive use of leisure time.  
               Study skills, exam focus, relaxation techniques and stress management.
Unit 3:   Communication skills.
Unit 4:   Teenage nutrition
Unit 5:    Eating disorders.
Unit 6:    Bullying (include cyber bullying and a glossary of current internet terms.)
Unit 7:    Bone health and osteoporosis.
Unit 8:    RSE education revision of puberty, TSS, common infections, cervical
                smears and breast awareness.
Unit 9:    Emotional health, depression, family conflict/fears, positive self esteem.
Unit 10:  Review/Evaluation
 
3rd Year
