Iceland:
At the end of February our 5th and 6th year Geography students went on an incredible trip to Iceland where they got to experience some of the geographical features they have been studying in class, up close. From Gulfoss Waterfall and the Black Sand Beach, it was an experience of a lifetime for the girls.
Gaisce:
Both the Bronze & Silver Gaisce students completed the Adventure Journey aspect of their Awards over the past few weeks. We had 46 Bronze students in Glendalough for 2 days/1 night and 29 Silver students in Lilliput for 3 days/2 nights. These students have been working away throughout the year to complete the other 3 challenge areas of the Award and we look forward to presenting their Awards to them at the end of the year.
Healthy Living Week:
We had another successful Healthy Living Week in April. We kick-started each morning off with a Morning Mile for the whole school community. Throughout the course of the week students competed in a Steps Challenge with Reiltin in TY coming 1st. House Sapphire won the 6th year Spinathon. During the lunch time events Nina (1P) & Cliona (2G) won the Plank Challenge with a record of over 4minutes, Mary (1E) won the Hang Tough Challenge and Nina (1P) also won the 30 Second Sit-Up Challenge. We also held our first ever Tryrox - an endurance challenge involved running, jumping, lunging and much more. Cathy (6S), Olivia (6G) and Eabha (5E) took home the prizes for this.
Dominican Quiz:
We entered a team of two 6th years & two 3rd years into the Annual Dominican Quiz this year. We competed against 8 other Dominican schools from across the country. There were 10 rounds in various categories including science, history, geography, literature and technology. After a fierce competition, Santa Sabina came out on top and were presented with the Dominican Quiz Cup.
Sabina Spotlight:
Sabina Spotlight shone a light on courage, creativity & community as 12 wonderful acts took to the stage to showcase the very best of Santa Sabina Spirit. We had everything from singers, dancers, bands and even some stand up comedy. It will certainly be a special memory from this year for everyone involved in the production, cast, crew & spectators. Congratulations to our first ever contest winners: Kate Squared!
Wellbeing Week:
Each morning for the week we had a Morning Mile to allow students time for reflection and to spend time with peers outside of the classroom. We had a variety of events on each day to celebrate wellbeing in our school community. These events included Mindful Meditation, Chess, Basketball, Mindful Colouring and a DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) class.
Lip Sync Battle:
Our 2nd year students took part in a Lip Sync Battle this term to compete for House Points. Well done to 2E who won the first Santa Sabina Lip Sync Battle title!
Spelling Bee:
We had 53 first year students competing in the 4th annual spelling bee contest this year. Congratulations to Ailbhe in 1P on her victory! A special thank you to the house prefects for taking on the roll of judges. Well done to all!
Fairtrade Breakfast:
As part of Fairtrade February our Equality Club ran a fairtrade breakfast before school providing fair trade tea, coffee, hot chocolate & bananas to the school community.
Science Club:
Science Club had another busy term. They designed & built their own rockets, an experience made even better by getting the chance to launch them! They took on the role of bioengineers one day and built their own bionic hands. They also extracted DNA from different fruit samples so they could visibly see the clusters of DNA at the end of the process. They had some fun chemistry experiments too involving heat & convection and building siphons. To end the year off, students went on a trip to Explorium where they had a day full of interactive science activities and workshops.
Inter Dominican Cup:
This year’s Dominica Cup was held in Muckross Park. It was a fantastic day filled with teamwork & sportsmanship. The level of commitment and positive spirit from all our teams made it a memorable day for everyone involved. A special shout out to the SS soccer team on their bronze medals - a well deserved reward for their hard work and determination.
Ultimate Frisbee:
We sent 4 teams to the All Ireland Indoor Schools Ultimate Frisbee Championships in Abbotstown this term. It was a Santa Sabina vs Santa Sabina final again this year ensuring the All Ireland Cup returned to Santa Sabina for the 6th year in a row!
Hockey:
Our Senior Hockey Team won their final against Mount Temple to become Northside League Champions. It was a tough match that ended with a 2-2 draw but Santa Sabina earned the win on penalties.
The Junior Hockey Team won their Leinster Final against Drogheda Grammar with a 2-0 win.
Athletics:
A number of students participated in the Leinster Schools Cross Country Final in February. In the Minor Race, Amy May O’Neill came 37th out of 200 students.
In the Junior Race, Carragh Nig Fhloinn came in 50th position out of a field of 100 students. In the Inter Race, out of a field of 71 students, Kate Gill placed 36th, Anna Vogelaar placed 29th, Elise Goodwin placed 25th and Beth Reamsbottom stormed home in 4th position.
Congratulations to the Santa Sabina Inter XC Team who subsequently came home in 2nd place in the All Ireland Schools XC championships in March, following their Silver Medal win at the Leinster Schools Competition.
Rowing:
Congratulations to Molly Lynch & Grace Eccles who took part in the Irish Schools Rowing Regatta in Limerick. Molly won Gold in the Junior Under 14 Single Sculls. She also won the Women’s Junior 16 Quadruple Skulls with her crew from the Neptune Rowing Club.
Debate:
Our senior debaters continued their Model UN journey in Holy Faith Clontarf at the beginning of March. Heather, Realta, Imogen, Emily, Niamh, Varvara & Zara blazed a trail at the event representing Latvia.
Heather & Niamh also came second in the Girls Mace in TCD. This is an event held to promote participation of girls and gender minorities in debate.
Ag Science:
Our 5th and 6th year students had a fantastic day at the UCD Agri Aware Walk & Talk. They learned about everything from dairy and lamb production to farm health and safety, sustainable grazing practices and the latest technology in agriculture, including drone use on farms. Students got an insight into the wide range of agricultural and environmental courses available at UCD, making it an inspiring and informative day.
Music:
The 3rd Year music students, along with members of the school orchestra were treated to a day out at the National Concert Hall. They had the opportunity to hear the incredible RTE National Symphony Orchestra perform live, an incredible experience.
