The Santa Sabina Institute of Physics Student of the Year Award 2020

This was awarded to Hannah Kileen, Class of 2020

This is awarded to the 6th year student who displays: excellence, enthusiasm, endeavour and achievement in the study of physics.

As well as receiving a certificate of the award, the nomination is recorded in a Roll of Honour on the IOP website www.iopireland.org / www.iop.org

The following 4th and 5th year Physics workshops took place

Telescopes through the ages with Aine Flood -Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies and I-Lofar Ireland’s Radio Telescope, Birr Castle.

5*S with Jack French- Using Satellites to Image Earth- NUIM Maynooth.

The Institute of Physics Annual Tyndall Lecture with Prof Peter Gallagher “Tuning in to the Radio Universe from Ireland” TCD and DIAS.

Invisible Light Ray Day Lunchtime Series of Talks with Anne Cleary and Denis Connolly the School of Looking.

All TY students had the opportunity to attend https://www.iwish.ie/ I-WISH is an initiative to inspire, encourage and motivate young female students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

Aoife McMahon and Séona Coogan Lucie Patterson made a physics video on The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle as part the Waterford Institute of Technology WIT 50 FilmPhys competition.

Students attended the Lancaster University online Planetarium.

Santa Sabina was successfully selected for 5 TY students to attend the Deloitte Internship. They were: Séona Coogan, Lucie Patterson, Evelyn Bogoslovskaya, Olivia Jerkland and Jane Geraghty.

Séona Coogan and Lucie Patterson also attended an internship organised by the Engineering Company Arup.

Aoife Murphy Engineer and European Space University graduated was a guest speaker for Science and Tech Weeks and spoke to TY students about about opportunities for females,

5th Physics students took part in The Globe Programme monitoring NO2 levels around our school.

Science Club

First and Second Year Science Club students received Certificates of Participation for entering the ReelLife Science video competition.

Science Club were delighted to welcome guest speaker Collie Ennis to the school in May. He works with the Zoology Department in Trinity and also as RTÉ’s wildlife/nature correspondent. He came into Science Club as an end of year treat for the students with some lovely creatures such as snakes and spiders to give a talk on animal adaptations and conservation.
