Science Success for Santa Sabina Science Students at SciFest@College 2019
On 3rd May 2019, in DCU 2nd year students Aoife McMahon and Rachel Ingle beat 103 other projects to win the top prize on the day, the SFI Discover Best Project Award. Their project “An Investigation into Making Food Waste into Bio-Plastic for Everyday Use” aims to “develop a means of producing bio-plastic from school and household food waste with a view of producing sufficient materials to manufacture canteen utensils for everyday use”.
As Best Project Award winners the girls will be invited to exhibit in Dublin at the National Finals on 23rd November, 2019. The prize for this exciting competition includes an all-expenses paid trip for the winning students and their teacher to represent Ireland at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Anaheim, California in May 2020.
Transition Year students Arlene Haas, Melanie Bryce and Katie Loughney also received an award for winning the Institute of Physics Award for the Best Physics Project. Their project was entitled “To test if hockey sticks with a low bow and high carbon content are really the most effective”.
We are very proud of both teams of students and wish them further success.
Mr Nugent is the mentoring teacher for both projects.
