Ultimate Frisbee- The Sport

Ultimate Frisbee is a fast moving disc sport. It is non-contact and self-refereed. It can be played on grass, sand or indoors and requires minimal equipment, making it incredibly adaptable to whatever area/number of people you have to play with.

In Santa Sabina, students get involved in Ultimate Frisbee in 4th year but also have the opportunity to begin playing in 5th and 6th year. We are always happy to welcome new players no matter their level of experience!

Playing Ultimate Frisbee in Santa Sabina:

4th Years

Students are introduced to Ultimate Frisbee in Transition Year when we invite Dominick from Dublin Youth Ultimate to deliver workshops on the sport and teach our students the rules and tactics of the game. We then organise an after-school mixed Ultimate Frisbee league with students from St. Fintan’s High School where our students get the opportunity to play a new and exciting sport with students from a neighbouring school. This is always a very competitive, exciting and enjoyable experience and one that our TY students remember as one of the highlights of their TY experience.

5th and 6th Years:

In 5th year, our students are introduced to the Inter-Schools Ultimate Frisbee competitions. Those students who have found a love for the sport in 4th year begin training in late August and train weekly with their coaches Mr. Hugh O’Neill from St. Fintan’s High School and Iníon Nic an Bhaird from Santa Sabina.

The 5th year team continues to train into 6th year and also enter the inter-school competitions which are usually hosted in March.

Training & Matches:

Training takes place before school, for one hour, from September to May.

The current 21/22 training schedule is:

5th Years: Monday 7.30am- 8.30am.

6th Years: Friday 7.30am-8.30am.

Matches are usually played during a full day blitz twice or three times a year.

The History of Ultimate Frisbee in Santa Sabina:

Ultimate Frisbee in Santa Sabina dates back to May 2016. This was when the first TY league was organised with St. Fintan’s High School. We entered our first teams in the All Ireland Schools Championships in 2017/2018 when we won the All Ireland title. We are proud to say we have dominated the competition ever since as we remain unbeaten. We look forward to many more years of success in the future.

Other opportunities for our Ultimate Frisbee players:

Since Ultimate Frisbee was introduced in Santa Sabina, a local club has also been established. Founded by past pupils, Flame Ultimate gives students (both past and present) the opportunity to play the sport outside of school. There are many club competitions throughout the year both in Ireland and the UK.

Many past pupils have also gone on to represent Trinity College, UCD, TUD, DCU and DIT in Ultimate Frisbee during their college years.

Each year, Santa Sabina students are invited to attend trials for the Irish Youth Ultimate team who go on to represent Ireland in the European Youth Ultimate Championships (EYUC). We always have lots of students who successfully make the team and represent their country in an opportunity of a lifetime
